Frequently asked questions
Why convert a GIF to MP4?
MP4 is typically 5–10× smaller than the same GIF at better quality, autoplays on every modern platform, and is what Twitter/X, Reddit and most sites actually serve when you "post a GIF". If your GIF is too big to share, MP4 is the answer.
Does the conversion preserve frame timing?
Yes — each GIF frame is written to the MP4 with its original delay, so the animation plays at the same speed.
Is my GIF uploaded to a server?
No. The GIF is decoded and re-encoded to H.264 by your own browser using its built-in hardware encoder (WebCodecs). Nothing is transmitted.
Which browsers support this?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4+ all support WebCodecs encoding. If your browser doesn’t, the tool will tell you instead of silently failing.
